Cheese Platters for Every Occasion

If you’re in the market for a cheese platter, it’s a great idea to know what you’re buying and what each one does best. Cheeses can be aged, soft, firm or blue – and all of them have something fresh to bring to the table. Stick to one type, or mix them up! The choice is yours.

Aged Cheddar, Gouda and Monterey Jack are fine examples of solid cheeses. These guys win extra points for being some of the most basic, likable and familiar cheeses on a platter. You should always include something that you know your guests will love.

Soft cheeses (like Brie, Camembert and Goat Cheese) are perfect to serve with hard crackers or crusty bread. With a similar texture, blue cheeses (like Gorgonzola or Stilton) can happily chill out on the same plate as the soft cheeses. These also match nicely with a side of grapes or apple slices.

Gruyere, Jarlsberg and Provolone find themselves in the ‘firm’ category of cheeses. You can go even more firm with fresh Parmesan or Asiago, and if you dare to add more punch to their flavor, they go really well with spicy sides.
