National Hot Dog Month

According to the National Sausage and Hot Dog Council (yes, there exists such a thing) it is estimated that Americans will consume a total of 7 billion hot dogs between Memorial Day and Labor Day this year. Apparently this upcoming weekend is our biggest time of hot dog consumption, with Americans munching on an estimated 155 million dogs. No wonder July is National Hot Dog Month!

The question is, what are you going to do with your dogs this month? First, let’s talk about what constitutes as a legitimate hot dog – at bare minimum, you need bread and a sausage. Yes, you can chop up some sausages and stick them in any old meal, but let’s just agree that’s not what July is all about.

Have you tried salsa on your hot dog? What about mashed potato and gravy? Why not try some coleslaw or ceasar salad? One word: Guacamole. Have you ever put some fancy cheese on your hot dog? Maybe bleu cheese with walnuts and arugula? Perhaps that’s way too gourmet. Let’s focus on the dog itself: traditional, kosher, kielbasa, Italian, chicken apple, Tofurky? And the bread! White, wheat, seeded, sprouted, gluten-free? The choices just go on!
