Most Common Food Allergies & Intolerances

With a little bit of knowledge, you can rest easy knowing that the food you’re giving to your guests is not only safe, but also delicious.

Peanuts and tree nuts are some of the most common food allergens. Many people suffer from nut allergies, with reactions that vary in their severity – from mouth swelling to anaphylaxis. Avoid cross contact with nuts, especially if you know that you have a guest who has an allergy.

Gluten and wheat allergies are actually two different things. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, and people with Celiac Disease have a strong immune system reaction to gluten, which is what makes it very dangerous for them to eat.

It is important to note that milk allergies and lactose intolerance are also different. Allergies involve the immune system and are potentially fatal, whereas a person who is intolerant has a hard time digesting the enzyme lactase.

Shellfish, soy, casein (a protein found in cheese) are also allergens that could be potentially harmful if served to a crowd. Stay on the safe side, and label foods with these allergens so that everybody can relax and have a great time.
