DIY Spice Blends

Posted on

Walking the aisles at your local supermarket, you’ll see that there’s no lack of spice blends on the market. With additives like unnamed ‘natural flavors,’ silicon dioxide, hydrogenated oils and hidden sugars infiltrating your store-bought spice blends, you’ll be happy to know how easy it is to make your own.

The first step to making your own spice blends is to set yourself up with spice jars. Upcycle your empty, used spice jars or buy reusable glass ones like these ones on Amazon. Investing in a label maker will keep your jars looking neat, but you can achieve simple labels by using a Sharpie on masking tape.

Next, you’ll need to stock up on the most common herbs and spices shared across most seasoning blends. These are; chili, cumin, garlic, onion, oregano, cinnamon, paprika, salt and pepper. This will be an investment up front, but your seasonings will last a while. To cut costs, try stocking up at Costco, or in bulk at a health food store like Rainbow. Amazon also sells seasonings in bulk amounts.

As for the blends themselves, check out these lists we found on the following sites:
