Keeping Your Fridge Fresh

Posted on

The secret to preventing your fridge from becoming a science project is knowing what’s lurking inside. Stop being too scared to look! Grab a trash can, a sharpie and start your investigation.

  1. Take everything out, one shelf at a time. Wipe the shelf with a wet cloth first, then spray all purpose cleaner and wipe with paper towel. If the shelves are dirty, your fridge is dirty.

  2. Designate areas for items that are alike. This way you know where to look, and how to explain the location of an item to a curious family member without having to physically come and see for yourself.

  3. Use a sharpie to mark things that will expire soon, or the the older of two open identical products. Put these items towards the front of the fridge!

  4. The general rule in a commercial kitchen fridge is First in, first out. This means that whatever is new goes behind the same item which is older. This is really important in preventing fresh produce wastage.

  5. If you’re not proactive about throwing away expired leftovers, and washing their containers, store cooled leftovers in ziplock bags. If you don’t eat the food in time, you can easily ditch the whole thing.

When you’re on top of your fridge situation, you will cook better meals with fresher ingredients. Even the best home cooks need help catering parties.
