Nuts: Are They Really Good for You?

Posted on

A handful of almonds will cost you 200 calories – around the same as a frosted donut. Macadamia nuts have 76g of fat per 100g – equivalent to more than two Big Macs. And your beloved peanut butter? Almost 100 calories per tablespoon. With all this fat, and all these calories, can nuts really be good for you?

Fat isn’t created equally. Nuts are packed with healthy fats – the kind that can lower your cholesterol and contribute to your vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant. Enjoyed in moderation, the fats found in nuts, avocados and fish can boost your health and immunity. Saturated fats, on the other hand, are a severe health risk – contributing to weight gain and medical problems.

When it comes to a daily calorie budget, it’s important to look at nutrient density above simply weighing up the numbers. While almonds and donuts may look calorically equal on paper, junk food can’t satisfy your body’s need for dietary fiber, and essential vitamins and minerals. Almonds boast a nutrient profile rich in magnesium, calcium, protein, fiber and potassium. When it comes to the crunch, reach for nuts above processed treats.
