Know Your Oils

Posted on

Oil is a vital ingredient in almost every meal, but the type of oil you use is just as important. This week we have an explanation of a few oils you might find familiar.

  1. High Heat Oils
Look for oils that have a high smoke point, to avoid the release of free radicals into your food. Try: safflower, avocado, peanut, sesame, rice bran, or sunflower.

  1. Oils for Sauces/Dressings
This is where olive oil takes the cake! Also, try walnut, flax or toasted sesame for more adventurous flavors.

  1. Oils to Avoid
Trans fats are never conducive to living a healthy life. These fats are shortenings, and partially hydrogenated vegetable oils – often found in packaged baked goods and fried fast food.

  1. Oils for Baking
When it comes to baking, coconut oil is a healthier alternative to butter and will work in most recipes. Canola and safflower oil also hold up nicely in baked goods.

Catering for a party requires much more than just preparing food. We prepare, transport, heat, serve, and clean up after food. We’re sure you’d agree that your role as the host of an event would be better utilized mingling and directing, rather than worrying about the food. Let us take care of that for you! We do Private Party catering in the San Francisco Bay Area, Corporate Catering in Silicon Valley (94025), and events all the way from Mountain View to San Francisco – call us today on (650) 961-3300.
