Understanding Paleo

The Paleo Diet has been trending for a couple of years now, but it’s been around since the cavemen. It is also known as the Paleolithic Diet – the food available to humans in the Paleolithic age. Is Paleo a fad diet – or are there long term health benefits that make Paleo eating sustainable for life?

What Paleo Includes
Fruit, nuts, meat, roots, vegetables and organ meat.

What Paleo Excludes
Dairy, grains, sugar, legumes, processed oil, salt, alcohol and coffee.

It is believed that human digestion could only handle these foods at that time in history, which leads critics to believe that the Paleo diet excludes foods that can be very healthy for us. For example, without dairy, a person may develop a calcium deficiency. On the flip side, dark, leafy greens are packed full of calcium.

Unlike veganism and vegetarianism, the Paleo diet doesn’t have a wider cause than health itself. Some people have found that their body runs better on a Paleo diet, especially because there is a strong focus on avoiding processed foods. Any diet that cuts down on sugar and increases fruit and vegetable consumption is bound to have a positive effect on your body.
