August Market Update

August is a bountiful month for produce! As we begin to wrap up the summer months, we prepare to say goodbye to Bloomsdale spinach, shishito peppers, red pearl onions, morels, artichokes and castle rock potatoes. But fear not, there is so much in store for this month, as the attached report shows.

In summary, August in the Bay Area means Mediterranean month. Heirloom varietals are out in full force – squashes, eggplants, tomatoes – Bellissimo! August produce lends itself to handmade pasta sauces, delicious healthy pizza toppings, bruschetta, and Greek salads. Take the opportunity to use fewer, but fresher, ingredients. Appreciate menu minimalism!

Fruit wise, August is all about melons, stonefruit, figs, and berries. Why not take advantage of  the nutritional powerhouse of figs, by making your own Fig Newtons at home? They help lower high cholesterol, are an excellent source of dietary fiber, and protect against macular degeneration. Of course, you can just eat them fresh, too, for a delicious afternoon snack.
