Kids in the Kitchen!

Posted on

Whenever you see pictures of children cooking in the kitchen with adults, the pictures manage to make the whole process look charming and stress-free. If you’ve actually ever cooked or baked with children in the kitchen, you know that it’s usually anything but calm. So how can you teach your children about food while staying sane?

  • Make a plan
Before you get into the kitchen, know what you are going to cook and have ingredients at the ready. If you haven’t got what you need, consider waiting until you’re prepared rather than winging it.
  • Try 1:1
Where possible, try to cook with one child at a time. Since some “jobs” in the kitchen are more exciting than others, you’ll avoid constant bickering by being able to give your full attention to one child.
  • Have boundaries
Yes, you can mix the batter. No, you can not use the stove by yourself. You need to keep kids safe, first and foremost, in the kitchen. If it’s hot, heavy, or sharp – insist that you’ll be responsible for those tasks until the child is developmentally ready.
