Clean Versions of Takeout

Posted on

Sometimes it’s hard to kick a craving for takeout, especially for comfort food. What if you didn’t have to deny your cravings, but you could simply alter the ingredients to make your “takeout” healthier? We have some ideas for you, when it comes to the classics.

Burgers
Make your own lean patties, use lower fat cheese, and stack some fresh veggies on your bun. For even better burgers, use good quality organic, grass-fed beef.

Fries

To serve with your burgers, or by themselves, bake yourself some fries from scratch. Cut potatoes to your desired thickness, spray or toss with olive oil, and sprinkle with salt and pepper. For something extra, add some fresh rosemary.

General Tso

This recipe from Damn Delicious is a lighter take on the Chinese-American favorite. Who knew cornflakes could add something to a baked General Tso’s Chicken dish?

Burritos

Redefined Mom gives us a delicious healthier burrito recipe, using chicken and all your favorite Mexican ingredients. Try it at home!

Pizza

Lavash bread makes a perfect thin and crispy pizza crust, especially when you bake it for ten minutes before putting on the toppings. Stack the pizza with veggies, lean meats, and low fat cheese. You’ll meet your pizza need without the excess calories.

Chow Mein Recipe

Posted on

Chow Mein is a popular noodle dish throughout the USA, and is widely known as American Chinese food. Though it is usually served as a side, with added protein, Chow Mein can be a meal in its own right. At Catering Central, we love a good Chow Mein, and we’re excited to share some of our signature recipe with you.

First, it is important to prep your vegetables before you start cooking – this means green cabbage, carrots, and green onions. For the sauce, Chow Mein is made with a mixture of light soy sauce, and dark soy – using a ratio of two parts light to one part dark. Making sure we have plenty of space on a flat top grill, we fry the egg noodles in canola oil before adding veggies and seasoning with the soy mixture. At the end, we add the all-important sesame oil, as well as salt and pepper.

When faced with the convenience of microwaveable mac and cheese, or the effort of a healthy, balanced meal – which will you choose? It’s easy (and cheap) to shop for, and prepare processed foods, but your body won’t thank you for it. Over time, the lack of nutrients, abundance of sodium, and fake ingredients will take their toll. It might be easier to eat fast food now, but in the long run, the complications aren’t worth the time saved.

A healthy meal is made of protein, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats, and fresh produce. Your body needs vitamins and minerals to run smoothly, so you can experience your best life. Here some some sites to inspire you to eat well – no excuses!

3 Ways to Prepare Salmon

Posted on

Salmon is a powerhouse; high in lean protein, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin B12. Boasting a range of health benefits, salmon steaks make the perfect meal for taste and nutrition. Here are three ways to prepare this tasty fish:

  1. Spice Rub
Sprinkle garlic salt and Trader Joe’s 21 Seasoning Salute on your salmon. Bake on a foil-covered tray at 400 degrees.

  1. Teriyaki Style
Put salmon steaks in a ziplock bag, and simply pour teriyaki sauce over the top. Let the salmon marinate for at least four hours, before baking or frying. Serve with sesame seeds on top, with a side of rice and salad.

  1. Lemon and Dill
Set each salmon steak on a piece of parchment paper large enough to wrap the entire piece of fish. Add zest on the top, as well as some juice. Season with salt, pepper and some fresh (or dried) dill. Bake at 375 degrees.

To find out what kind of salmon recipes we make at Catering Central, take a look at the menus on our website – or call us today on (650) 961-3300. Top 5 Reusable Kitchen Items

Posted on

Your kitchen is a place where new inventions come pouring in, but there’s something so satisfying about getting back to basics. Many kitchen items perform one function only, yet these five things can be upcycled and reused day after day.

  1. Coffee Filter
If you enjoy a steaming cup of pour over every morning, you’re likely to be using paper filters. For a little more than the cost of a box of paper filters, you can pick up a cloth filter that does the job day after day. Rinse, hang out to dry!

  1. Glass Jars
Pasta sauce, peanut butter, olives and salsa all tend to come in glass jars. When you’re done with the product, remove the label (with the help of Goo Gone or Eucalyptus Oil) and reuse the clean jar.

  1. Bags from Grocery Stores
Whether you’re finding uses for disposable bags at home (e.g. garbage liners, storage) or reusing cloth bags at the store, there are global benefits of being mindful of waste.

  1. Salt and Pepper Grinders
When you purchase whole salt and pepper at the grocery store, they come in grinders that many throw in the trash after one use. Simply take off the lid, and refill.

  1. Food Storage Containers
Bringing your own food to work or school is good for your wallet and waistline. In addition, you cut down on waste when you reuse the containers in which you store food.
