Fall Food and Wine Pairings

Posted on

While the fall season may have you wanting to snuggle up with a pumpkin spice latte, there are still opportunities to pair a good wine with your meal… or dessert. Find out which wines do best with certain fall favorites:

  • Pumpkin Pie
The Wine Enthusiast offers an extensive list of wines that would pair well with this tasty dessert – click here to find out their suggestions. Predictably, sweet wines are highly recommended!
  • Roasted Pears
Why not eat your pears with cheese, then pair the two with some Sauvignon Blanc? Crisp and sweet, this wine will complement your pears best with goat’s cheese. Delish!
  • Wild Game
Wide Open Spaces teach us how to pair game with wine in this article here. Like the article says – why go to all the trouble of hunting game, and then not go the extra mile and pair it well with wine?

Here at Catering Central, we love pairing wine with food to help bring out flavor and enhance your dining experience. We’d be happy to hear about the vision you have for your party, and work with you to make it happen. We do Private Party catering in the San Francisco Bay Area, Corporate Catering in Silicon Valley, and events all the way from Mountain View to San Francisco. Artichoke Recipes

Posted on

Apples and pumpkins are obvious crowd favorites for fall produce, so today we’re shining some light on the humble artichoke. You can find locally grown artichokes right here in the Bay Area, with farms as close as Gilroy. Here are some fresh ways to use an often unfamiliar vegetable:

  • Roasted
When a recipe starts with, “It’s so simple, it’s hard to call it a recipe!” you know it’s got to be good! Try All Recipes Simply Roasted Artichoke – you won’t be sorry!
  • Stuffed
Starter or side, you’ll want to stuff an artichoke this fall. Here’s a recipe from Simply Recipes – a lovely balance of the creaminess of cheese, with the brightness of lemon.
  • In Pasta
The Spruce posted a penne recipe with fresh artichokes (you can find it here) that is so tasty, but at the same time, so simple. This recipe is full of whole foods and clean flavors, topped with Parmigiano-Reggiano.
  • Dip
Classic artichoke dip takes on a whole new meaning when you use fresh artichokes rather than canned. My Recipes have paired artichoke with kale, and it’s fure to be a party favorite.

Alternative Flours

Posted on

Whether you’ve got food allergies, intolerances, or you’re just looking for something new, alternative flours are a great way to vary your diet. Many people rely on non-wheat flours to continue to be able to eat baked goods, and we’ve never before had so many options from which to choose! With gluten free flour, you’ll need more moisture to keep your food from becoming dense, so make sure you use a recipe rather than just Here are a few ways to use just a few alternative flours:

(1) Almond Flour – macarons, “breading” in place of panko, general baked goods
(2) Rice Flour – mochi, thickening agent in soups, bread
(3) Chickpea Flour – bind burgers, pizza dough
(4) Potato Flour – bread making, muffins
(5) Buckwheat Flour – waffles, soba, crepes
(6) Oat Flour – cookies, quick breads, pancakes

You can enjoy all foods in moderation, as long as they’re part of a balanced diet. At Catering Central, we highly value food as a means of connection with others, and aim to give all of our clients a positive and satisfying experience with our services. If you’re looking for corporate catering in the San Francisco Bay (94111), private party catering in Sunnyvale (94086), or general catering in Mountain View (94040) – call us today on (650) 961-3300!

Rosh Hashana

Posted on

The Jewish high holiday season is upon us, with Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Simchat Torah, and Hanukkah all coming up within the next few months. Rosh Hashana begins at sunset today, and is the celebration of the Jewish New Year. Here are recipes of the traditional foods served at the Rosh Hashana table:

(1) Round Challah
This Jewish bread, usually served as a braided loaf, is made in a round spiral to symbolize a prosperous new year ahead. Other interpretations of the significance of a round challah include; representation of a crown/the sovereignty of God, and the never ending opportunity to return to God.

(2) Apples and Honey
Two of the sweetest foods combined represent the wish for a sweet new year.

(3) Brisket

This cut of meat may represent hardship – something that Jewish people have experienced throughout the centuries. Also, it has become a traditional meal so close to the heart of high holidays that many families have their own recipes that so heavily remind them of the holiday table.

Vegetarian food is often shunned by meat-eaters as lacking in taste and substance. While some vegetarian meals leave a lot to be desired, other meatless meals are deliciously hearty and fit for any hungry omnivore. Here are five such recipes, that will keep you sustained and coming back for more:

  1. Roast Butternut Squash, Spinach, and Barley Risotto from Delicious Everyday

Interesting Packed Lunches

Posted on

If you’ve resolved to start 2017 on a more healthy note, start by taking your own packed lunch to work. Instead of the usual unhealthy options available when eating out daily, you can control your nutritional intake by packing it yourself. Sure, it takes longer to prepare, but the cost and health benefits are worth it.

  • Wraps
Because of the flat bread, wraps travel better than a regular sandwich. Using some lavash bread, you can even spread cream cheese across the surface as a barrier for some of the wetter ingredients. Try chicken, deli meat, or tuna with basic salad ingredients.
  • Thermos Food Jar
If you’re not into cold or room temperature lunch options, a food thermos will keep your food warm until lunch. There’s no limit to the types of food you can put in one of these jars, but popular lunch ideas include; soups, rice dishes, pasta, and even oatmeal for on-the-go breakfasts.
  • Salads
With a good reusable salad container, you can take your own salad wherever you go. It doesn’t matter if your greens are kale, romaine, spring mix, or arugula – you can be as creative as you like with salad. You don’t even need greens if you use grains like cous cous or quinoa as a base!
  • Leftovers
If there’s a microwave available, you can pack all kinds of leftovers in a glass container with a plastic lid. Make your packed lunch deliciously easy by eating what you’ve already made the night before.

At Catering Central we highly value health and whole foods. We believe food plays a vital role in not only physical, but emotional health. Our social lives strengthen by building relationships over food, leading to a greater level of connectedness with the world around us. If you’re interested in having your next San Francisco Bay Area (94110, 94024) private or corporate event catered by a company working from this philosophy, call us today on (650) 961-3300. We can’t wait for your call!

DIY Freezer Meals

Posted on

There’s no hiding the fact that supermarket freezer meals leave a lot to be desired. For a start, they rarely look like the picture on the box, and they’re also usually such tiny portions that they leave you feeling unsatisfied. With some glass or aluminum containers, you can pack your freezer with healthier, homemade freezer meals that you can heat and eat when you’re in a hurry. Here are some classic food ideas for your freezer stockpile:

  • Lasagne
Make your own lasagne using regular beef, or lighten it up with turkey. Assemble the lasagne according to your favorite recipe, but don’t bake it just yet. For best results, thaw the lasagne on the day you’ll be eating it, and bake it fresh.
  • Enchiladas
Just like the lasagne idea, make your favorite enchilada recipe up until the point of baking. Freeze in an ovenproof dish, covered with a lid or foil, and bake on the day. You’ll love the results, and be impressed with how much better it tastes compared to frozen enchiladas from the store.
  • Pizza
Why suffer through thin, sparsely topped frozen pizzas that taste like cardboard? You can make your own from scratch, or hack a store bought frozen pizza by adding a whole host of extra ingredients. Make your pizza your way!

  2. Homemade Kung Pao Chicken from Epicurious
While this recipe requires a quite a few ingredients from the pantry, once you’ve stocked the cupboard with these items, you can make Kung Pao multiple times before needing to restock.

  3. Roman Chicken from Heather Cristo
Baked chicken thighs and a flavorful tomato sauce develop this meal into a delicious weeknight meal. This tasty dish is easy to make, and serves well on top of whole wheat spaghetti.

Our good friends at SurveyMonkey decided to curate a small recipe book of foods that their employees have enjoyed from across the globe.
