Multi-Holiday Parties

Posted on

There’s no need to feel uncomfortable this holiday season when it comes to inviting friends and family over to your house to celebrate the holidays. While some people are filled with Christmas cheer, others will be having a happy Hanukkah or maybe even celebrating Kwanzaa. The beauty of a generic holiday party is that everyone gets to try something new.

Traditional Hanukkah food includes latkes (potato pancakes) served with applesauce and sour cream, as well as deliciously sweet jelly donuts called Sufganiyot. Since Hanukkah is the celebration of the miracle of oil, the food reflects the holiday’s oil-filled beginnings.

Add a touch of Kwanzaa to your holiday party menu by serving sweet potatoes, collard greens and black-eyed peas. This holiday celebrates African heritage and the first fruits of the harvest.

For the addition of Christmas cheer, add peppermint, cinnamon and ginger to everything! The taste of Christmas is all about indulging the sweet tooth with spicy, decadent treats.

Go ahead and walk bravely into hosting a multi-holiday party!

Happy Healthy Holidays

Posted on

The holidays are here, and with them come the temptation of a lot of delicious food. From latkes to lollipops, stuffing to sufganyiot, cornbread to candy canes – November and December are full of such (caloric) fun. So, for those of you on a diet, how can you keep your willpower while enjoying yourself this holiday season?

Firstly, we believe that healthy eating shouldn’t be a result of dieting. Healthy eating is a lifestyle that prioritizes fresh whole foods, limiting or eliminating processed food. Everything can be enjoyed in moderation – the key is moderation.

Here are a couple of practical tips to keep yourself healthy this season:

(1) Don’t stand next to the snack table! If you gravitate towards the snacks during awkward holiday moments, find another way to occupy your time. Awkward moments are aplenty at family gatherings, so Instagram some photos of a drunk uncle or something.

(2) If you’re hosting, provide a lot of fresh food options. If you’re bringing something to somebody else’s house, ditch the packaged foods and make something delicious out of real ingredients. If you’re in a time crunch, choose a store-bought item that isn’t laden with artificial flavors and colors.

(3) Eat until you’re satisfied – not until you’re bursting at the seams. Nobody wants to roll you out the door at the end of the night.

(4) If you’re hosting, give your guests some leftovers as they leave. You don’t want to be eating pecan pie for breakfast, lunch and dinner all week. Well, you might want to, but it’s not the most productive health choice.

Enjoy yourself, and be thankful!
