Rosh Hashana

Posted on

The Jewish high holiday season is upon us, with Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Simchat Torah, and Hanukkah all coming up within the next few months. Rosh Hashana begins at sunset today, and is the celebration of the Jewish New Year. Here are recipes of the traditional foods served at the Rosh Hashana table:

(1) Round Challah
This Jewish bread, usually served as a braided loaf, is made in a round spiral to symbolize a prosperous new year ahead. Other interpretations of the significance of a round challah include; representation of a crown/the sovereignty of God, and the never ending opportunity to return to God.

(2) Apples and Honey
Two of the sweetest foods combined represent the wish for a sweet new year.

(3) Brisket

This cut of meat may represent hardship – something that Jewish people have experienced throughout the centuries. Also, it has become a traditional meal so close to the heart of high holidays that many families have their own recipes that so heavily remind them of the holiday table.

If you need a little extra help this holiday season, call us today at Catering Central on (650) 961-3300. If you have an upcoming event and require catering services, there are a few things to get in order before making the call. This blog post serves to educate you on the information you should have on hand when you seek out a catering company, so that you can have the best experience possible.

  • Numbers
First things first: How many people will be at your event? In order to get a handle on what the caterers will do, we need to know how many mouths will be in attendance. Let’s avoid that awkward moment where there’s not enough food at an event!
  • Services
Do you want hors d’oeuvres, brunch, lunch, casual, or fine dining? Do you need tables, chairs, linens, a buffet, or a sit-down meal? If you’re not sure about what you need, explain the nature of the event to us, and we can help you prepare accordingly through our experienced suggestions.
  • Budget
Have an idea of what you’d like to spend, but be flexible and realistic. At Catering Central we provide value for money, balanced with quality service, so keep that in mind when planning your budget. You may also need help with factoring in peripheral costs that you haven’t considered – give us a call so we can help you know what kind of funds are necessary for your event!

  • Location
Knowing the location helps us give you an accurate quote. Also, a map/layout of the venue helps our team plan the flow of the event, and stay efficient with service.

Boost Your Veggie Intake

Posted on

Parents have been hiding vegetables in their children’s food for decades, but you’ve probably never considered hiding veggies in your own food – right? Even though you know they’re there, vegetables can be “hidden” in all kinds of foods that would be otherwise nutritionally challenged. Even if the food you’re cramming with vegetables isn’t technically healthy, boosting the nutrient level is still worth something. Here are some ways to get your five a day!

  • Black Bean Brownies – by Chocolate Covered Katie
You might be skeptical about the texture of black beans inside of something as decadent as a brownie, but these fiber-filled beans eliminate your need for flour and you can’t even taste them. These are something you need to make to believe!
  • Frittata/Omelette
Do you have leftover veggies from the night before, or some vegetables hanging out in the fridge closing in on their expiration date? Mix them into some eggs and bake. Alternatively, use them as stuffing in an omelette. Yes, you’ll be able to taste these vegetables, but you’ll also pack in far more vegetables than you would in any other breakfast.
  • Pasta Sauce
A grate way to boost pasta and meatballs is to grate a ton of vegetables then add them to the sauce. Onions, zucchini, red bell pepper, and carrots can all be sauteed in some olive oil a few minutes before pouring a jar of sauce on top. Use spaghetti squash instead of pasta for even MORE vegetables.
  • Muffins
Again with the grater – you can add all kinds of things to a muffin recipe.

You can enjoy all foods in moderation, as long as they’re part of a balanced diet. At Catering Central, we highly value food as a means of connection with others, and aim to give all of our clients a positive and satisfying experience with our services. If you’re looking for corporate catering in the San Francisco Bay (94111), private party catering in Sunnyvale (94086), or general catering in Mountain View (94040) – call us today on (650) 961-3300!

Catering Central Salad Bars

Posted on

There’s nothing quite like sinking your teeth into a big, loaded salad for lunch on a hot summer’s day. At Catering Central, we love setting up fresh, quality salad bars for our clients – giving your event’s guests the chance to customize their own meal. That’s right – salad isn’t just a side! A well made salad can be a meal in and of itself. Consider a salad bar for your next private or corporate event, catered by our team.

We’re all about themes, so salad bars can be inspired by the flavors of Asia, Latin America, the Mediterranean – or beyond! The first step towards any salad is the foundation of greens – and we provide a whole host of leaves on which to build your meal.  Whether you’re into spinach, kale, romaine, butter lettuce, or arugula – we’ve got you covered.

Depending on your theme, your salad bar will consist of a wide variety of colorful, fresh produce and dressings to suit. Fruits, nuts, seeds, and breads also pump up any salad – sending it from side to main in an instant. The number one way to make a salad that will sustain your guests, is by providing lean proteins. Chicken, beef, fish, eggs, and tofu are just a few examples of protein that will provide fuel through the afternoon.

At Catering Central we highly value health and whole foods. We believe food plays a vital role in not only physical, but emotional health. Our social lives strengthen by building relationships over food, leading to a greater level of connectedness with the world around us. If you’re interested in having your next San Francisco Bay Area (94110, 94024) private or corporate event catered by a company working from this philosophy, call us today on (650) 961-3300. We can’t wait for your call!

  • Theme
Each part of the meal has been selected to compliment the others, with all elements working in one accord. Themed meals are a symphony of flavors dictated by a particular ethnic cuisine, giving your guests a meal they won’t forget.
  • Inclusivity
We diligently provide choices for all types of dietary needs and preferences. For example; vegetarian, gluten free, vegan, and dairy free guests will always have something delicious to eat.
  • Seasonal
We serve what nature makes available during the season – giving you the best produce that can be obtained.
  • Incredible Salads
Salads are easily the most overlooked part of a menu, and our salads are anything but boring. Specially selected to fit the mains to which they have been paired, our salads offer distinct flavor profiles. For example, our California menus have salads with avocado and quinoa, and our BBQ menus boast a wide range of fresh veggies to suit your plate.

Market Update for May

Posted on

Pacific Produce regularly releases an overview pertaining to which produce is in season, as well as market updates relates to prices and availability of crops. This week on the blog we’ll give you a quick rundown of what kinds of changes you’ll see in stores and markets near you. For full details, see the documents posted below.

What’s abundant:
Now is the time to grab some cucumbers, zucchini, yellow squash, green bells, green onions, eggplant and tomatoes. They’re in abundance and the prices are low! Melons are also getting sweeter and are at a great price point.

What’s struggling:
Organic greens – insect activity has ruined many crops. Brussels sprouts are also in low supply and will get very expensive. Chinese garlic and bush berries are also having a hard time.

What’s seasonal:
Green almonds, California avocados, California asparagus, green garlic, English peas, snap peas, fava beans, romano beans, local herbs, mini nasturtiums, baby leeks, ramps, fragrant rose petals, purple artichokes, fiddle head ferns, stinging nettles, green garlic, pea greens, spring onions, purple asparagus, black grapes, field grown rhubarb (WA).

3 Ways to Prepare Salmon

Posted on

Salmon is a powerhouse; high in lean protein, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin B12. Boasting a range of health benefits, salmon steaks make the perfect meal for taste and nutrition. Here are three ways to prepare this tasty fish:

  1. Spice Rub
Sprinkle garlic salt and Trader Joe’s 21 Seasoning Salute on your salmon. Bake on a foil-covered tray at 400 degrees.

  1. Teriyaki Style
Put salmon steaks in a ziplock bag, and simply pour teriyaki sauce over the top. Let the salmon marinate for at least four hours, before baking or frying. Serve with sesame seeds on top, with a side of rice and salad.

  1. Lemon and Dill
Set each salmon steak on a piece of parchment paper large enough to wrap the entire piece of fish. Add zest on the top, as well as some juice. Season with salt, pepper and some fresh (or dried) dill. Bake at 375 degrees.
