Drought and Rising Food Prices

Posted on

If you’re noticing price increases on some of your favorite items at the supermarket, it could be because we’re in drought. No kidding, Californians, we are still experiencing severe drought. Apparently it takes one gallon of water to produce one almond, so let that be food for thought! Here are some more drought-affected foods:

  1. Beer
According to Golden Road Brewery, every gallon of beer uses four gallons of water. Since we have a three year drought on our hands, get ready for prices to spike.
  1. Dairy
Corn growth is down due to drought, meaning cattle-rearing costs are up. With more money going into the feed, it’s only natural that we’ll be paying a higher cost for the milk.
  1. Produce
Avocados, broccoli, lettuce, bell peppers and berries will be affected by the drought. Some crops, like olives, nuts and some fruits are set to have lasting effects as vines and trees die without adequate water supply.
  2. Beef
Beef prices are expected to rise 5-6% as the effects of the drought continue. Considering it takes cattle 16-18 months to mature, the water shortage has meant that keeping the cows healthy has become a more difficult task. It’s estimated that it takes 2,400 gallons of water to make a pound of beef!

We encourage you to be mindful of what you’re eating and the impact those foods have on our resources. You never know – changing what you eat could lead to some new favorite foods.
