Guide to Sugar Substitutes

Posted on

When it comes to sugar, we all know that we should eat less. Faced with a myriad of other sweetening options, it can be extremely confusing to choose something that is better for us in the long run. While some substitutes tout calorie-free benefits, the long term effects are known carcinogens, which is certainly not what we’re aiming for. Here are five sugar substitutes that may not save calories, but offer other nutritional benefits.

  • Stevia
A potent plant-based sweetener, stevia extract comes in either liquid or powder form. Stevia is naturally calorie-free, but it does have an odd flavor if too much is used. A great alternative for people watching their weight, or managing sweet cravings.
  • Honey
Sweeter and denser than table sugar, honey offers antioxidants and allergen protection with which sugar is unable to compete. Honey also boasts a healthier glycemic index than sugar, making its energy more slowly released in the body.
  • Agave Nectar
Sweeter than honey still, agave has a significantly lower glycemic index than regular table sugar. Made from the agave plant, agave nectar holds its own in baked goods – behaving a lot like sugar.
  • Maple Syrup
Maple boasts minerals and antioxidants, where table sugar falls flat. Make sure you buy the real stuff for nutritional benefits – maple flavored corn syrup is just sugar in disguise.
  • Blackstrap Molasses
While it’s not for excessive use, this sweetener is full of minerals like calcium, iron, copper, and manganese. Certainly a better nutritional profile than sugar!

While there’s no such thing as “good” and “bad” food, let’s work together on spending the majority of our lives filling our bodies with nutritious fuel instead of empty calories. Cutting Added Sugar

Posted on

When you take a moment to think about how much sugar is in your favorite food and drink, versus the recommended daily limit for added sugars, it can be a sobering realization. The FDA recommends that women consume no more than 25g of added sugar daily, and men, no more than 37.5g. To put this in perspective, there are 39g of sugar in a can of Coke, and 44.4g in a can of Fanta. Ouch.

Not only is added sugar laced through some very unsuspecting foods (bread, mayonnaise, granola), it is extremely addictive – see this article and video for more details. It may come as a surprise that fruit is also jam packed with sugar that can foil your weight loss plans, but that’s a topic for another day. Fruits contain a nutrient dense profile that foods with added sugar can’t hold a candle to. One mango can contain up to 46g of sugar, yet offering a whole host of health benefits stated on this page.

While Fanta and mangoes have similar sugar levels, it’s important to understand that sodas offer no nutritional value whatsoever. Cutting added sugars may be hard at first, but you can make gradual changes to support a healthier lifestyle. Stevia is a plant-based sweetener that goes well in coffee and homemade baked goods. Who knows? Eventually you may start preferring your food and drinks less sweet, especially once you lower your added sugar intake levels.
